“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
(St Paul, 1 Corinthians 13:13)
When Saint John Paul II died in 2005, he left behind a half finished Encyclical on the virtue of Charity. When he became Pope, Benedict XVI picked this up and completed it, and it became Deus Caritas Est. Then, in 2007, Benedict issued the Encyclical Spe Salvi on the virtue of Hope. Finally, at the time of his resignation, he himself left the manuscript of an Encyclical on the virtue of Faith for his own successor to complete. Pope Francis issued it in 2013 as Lumen Fidei, the first Encyclical of his Pontificate.
In this reading course, we will investigate the themes and messages that run through each of the three encyclicals in order to deepen our understanding of the three theological virtues: faith, hope and love.
